What is a Sinus Infection?
(Sinusitis) (Acute Bacterial Rhinosinusitis - ABRS)
A sinus infection, or rhinosinusitis, is inflammation of the sinuses caused by a bacterial or viral infection.
Symptoms include facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, thick nasal discharge, headache, and sometimes fever.
The infection occurs when the sinus openings become blocked, trapping mucus and allowing bacteria to grow.
While most sinus infections are viral and resolve on their own, bacterial sinus infections may require antibiotic treatment.
Clinical Criteria for Acute Bacterial Rhinosinusitis (ABRS)
The American Academy of Otolaryngology defines ABRS based on the following criteria:
Symptoms persist for 10 days or more without improvement.
Severe symptoms, such as high fever (102°F or higher), facial pain, or purulent nasal discharge, last for at least 3-4 consecutive days at the start of illness.
Symptoms worsen after an initial period of improvement (often referred to as "double worsening").
