What is a Sinus Infection?

(Sinusitis) (Acute Bacterial Rhinosinusitis - ABRS)

  • A sinus infection, or rhinosinusitis, is inflammation of the sinuses caused by a bacterial or viral infection.

Clinical Criteria for Acute Bacterial Rhinosinusitis (ABRS)

  • The American Academy of Otolaryngology defines ABRS based on the following criteria:

    • Symptoms persist for 10 days or more without improvement.

    • Severe symptoms, such as high fever (102°F or higher), facial pain, or purulent nasal discharge, last for at least 3-4 consecutive days at the start of illness.

    • Symptoms worsen after an initial period of improvement (often referred to as "double worsening").
